Francis McCormack is a well-known, respected and popular player on the Irish poker scene. A disciple of draw poker which he has “played for longer than he can remember” he turned his sights to Texas Hold’em late in 2005 after watching the game on television.

Cutting his teeth in Dublin’s fabled Merrion Casino the Kildare horse racing fanatic soon made up for lost time winning club tournaments by the bucket load. By 2007 he was ready for the major stage and announced his arrival by repelling 203 rivals to land the Celtic Poker Tour Grand Final earning a €40,500 winner’s check in the process. The annual Celtic Poker Tour Final is an event which has been kind to Francis – or Wally as he prefers to be known – as he has also finished twelfth and third in the competition.

But make no mistake he is no one-trick pony as his triumph in the European Deepstack Championships testifies. Overcoming a field of 153 players from all over the world Wally pocketed €52,000 in February 2009. His exploits and countless domestic final table appearances led to McCormack landing the Irish Poker Rankings an accolade which has given him “immense satisfaction.”

As for the future the plan is simple: “I love poker and I love playing poker,” Wally explains. “It gives me so much pleasure, you never stop learning in this game so how can you get board? Every poker player dreams of winning the ‘big one’ and as I’ve already won a satellite on Brucepoker.com into the Irish Open and booked my flights to Vegas for the World Series, who knows what 2010 will bring!”
